Metroidvania Movement Sandbox is a focused 2D prototype built to explore and refine the core feel of metroidvania-style movement. This project is centered around responsiveness, precision, and fluidity—everything that makes traversal satisfying in modern platformers.

The controller features a carefully tuned movement system designed to feel tight and consistent at all times. It includes advanced mechanics such as coyote time and jump buffering, allowing players to perform jumps even in edge-case scenarios, reducing frustration and improving control. A custom gravity system ensures that jumps reach a predictable height while still allowing for expressive movement, including short hops and faster falls depending on input.

In addition to jumping, the prototype includes a dash mechanic that temporarily cancels vertical motion, enabling fast horizontal traversal and opening possibilities for advanced movement techniques. Combined with double jump support, the system encourages experimentation and rewards player skill.

To enhance the overall feel, the project also implements procedural squash and stretch animations, inspired by classic animation principles. The character visually reacts to movement—stretching upward during jumps, compressing while falling, and extending during dashes—adding weight and personality without affecting gameplay or collision.

This sandbox is ideal for:

  • Testing level design and jump distances
  • Prototyping platforming challenges
  • Studying responsive movement systems
  • Serving as a foundation for a full metroidvania project

The goal of this project is not to be a complete game, but a polished and extensible movement foundation that can be expanded with combat, enemies, abilities, and level progression systems.
